Nicolaes
van Helt Stockade

Netherlands • 1614−1669
A Dutch painter and printmaker. Stokkeid was educated in Antwerp by a certain Daniel Rijkkart (about whom little is known) and became a master at the Guild of St. Luke in 1646. He went to France, married Johanna Huwart in Lyon, a native of Antwerp, and became the son-in-law of Jan Asselain. In Paris he worked on behalf of Louis XIII of France. He received commissions from Christina I of Sweden and Charles II of England.

In 1652 he came to Amsterdam and in 1653/54 took part in the founding of the Brotherhood in collaboration with Bartolomeus van der Helst, Thomas Asselin and Johan Heidekoper van Maarsseven. Stockade was one of the first to be commissioned to decorate the new city hall in Amsterdam.

In 1658 he painted nudes with Willem Stryker, Ferdinand Bohl, and Govert Flink.

Stockade is buried at the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.
