The icon "Pokrov". Exhibition of a single icon as part of the "Holy Countenances" series

Mostra 12 − 31 ottobre 2021
On October 12 the Primorye Picture Gallery presents the icon "Pokrov" from the collection of the Primorye State Picture Gallery as part of the "Saint Countenances" exhibition series. The icon was painted in the 19th century.
On 14 October the Orthodox Church celebrates the feast of the Intercession of the Theotokos. It is believed that in Russia the feast of the Intercession of the Mother of God was established in the middle of the XII century by Vladimir Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky. The history of the feast of the Intercession of the Theotokos can be found in the Life of St. Andrew the Fool for Christ, who saw the Mother of God accompanied by John the Forerunner and John the Theologian during a service in the Church of the Holy Virgin in Blachernae, Constantinople (according to tradition the robe of the Mother of God brought from Jerusalem was kept there). Entering the temple, Our Lady came to the pulpit and prayed there, and then went to the altar, took off her veil and stretched it over the people as a sign of protection and patronage.
The exhibition will run until October 31.
