The Middle Ages: The Treasures of Munster Cathedral

Mostra 22 maggio 2021 − 14 agosto 2022
The Cleveland Museum of Fine Arts is holding an exhibition "The Middle Ages: The Treasures of Muenster Cathedral".

Visitors will see unique relics: gold and silver reliquaries, jeweled crosses, liturgical garments and illuminated manuscripts - some of the rare treasures kept at St. Paul's Cathedral in Münster, northwest Germany.

Because the cathedral was the heart of the diocese and the secular territory of the bishop, many objects of art were commissioned or donated to the cathedral. For the medieval Christian, collections of relics and relics had spiritual power and political influence. Many of Munster's reliquaries, created between the 1000s and 1500s, were permanently displayed on the altar, while others were only brought out during liturgical celebrations.
