Mostra 12 febbraio − 4 settembre 2022
The Boijmans van Beuningen Museum and the Maritime Museum Rotterdam are organising a major exhibition entitled 'Maritime Masterpieces'.

The exhibition features 54 paintings by Hieronymus Bosch, Claes van Wieringen, Willem van de Velde the Younger, Ludolf Bakuizen, Hendrik Mesdag, Claude Monet, Johan van Mastenbroek, Guido van der Werve and Frank Stella as well as the oldest western European ship models. A changing selection of 34 drawings by Willem van de Velde the Elder together with his famous 'pen paintings' will be on display from around 1425. The most important maritime works of art from the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum are combined with masterpieces from the Maritime Museum's collection to give a colourful and surprising overview of more than 600 years of maritime painting.

Combining paintings from the collection of the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum with ship models and other objects from the Maritime Museum's collection, the project showcases art history and maritime history. The exhibition features images of wild seas, naval battles, ships stranded in ice, and views of rivers and harbours by famous Golden Age artists such as Willem van de Velde the Elder, 19th century masters such as Claude Monet, and contemporary artists such as Dolph Henkes.
