Reunion. Deesis of the 15th century

The exhibition is dedicated to the outstanding, original works of Tver painting - the icons "Christ Almighty", "Our Lady" and "Apostle Paul". Their fate was not easy. Many centuries ago they were part of the deesis rank - a special row of icons where the saints are depicted in prayer (Greek: deisis, deesis) to the Lord. For about a hundred years these monuments have been in different collections, and no information has been preserved as to which church they were created for.

Thanks to the realization of the exhibition project, all three icons will be temporarily united in one exposition space and for the first time after a long break will be presented as an artistic complex. This will allow not only to clarify their figurative and stylistic characteristics, but also to take a new look at the creative activity in the Tver Principality - one of the most significant cultural centers of ancient Russia.

The peculiarities of style and iconography indicate that the Deesis masters were modeled on monuments of the Greek artistic circle. The manner of the leading iconographer who executed the image of Christ Almighty was formed under the influence of Constantinople painting of the first half of the 15th century. The deesis rank was probably created in the third quarter of the 15th century, during the period of relative political stability in the Tver lands, shortly before their annexation to the Principality of Moscow.

The exhibition is designed for both specialists and a wide range of visitors interested in domestic medieval art.
