Born in 1938 in Moscow. He graduated from the art faculty of the Moscow polygraphic University in 1961. He headed the artistic Council of "industrial graphic art". From 1958 to 1993 he worked as an artist in the Studio of applied graphics Combine graphic art of the artists Union of the RSFSR. Since 1967 member of the Union of artists of the USSR, and since 1991 - of the Union of designers of Russia. Since 1992 member of the Academy of graphic design. In 1992, he founded the Bureau of graphic design "Akopov: Design and Advertising". He is also a regular jury member of national and international exhibitions-competitions of graphic design.

Artist Valery Akopov was one of the first in the Soviet Union started to do graphic design. His fame began with a set of matchboxes. For this prosaic subject matter he found interesting the design and sent the work to the world exhibition in Brussels.

The most famous in the former Soviet space project by Valery Akopov, a sign of quality Department. He also created the logo of the Bolshoi Theatre, the emblem for many the Moscow firms.

The people can evaluate the works of Valery Akopov according to the book "Irkutsk Baroque", released in 1993. It's about Irkutsk Orthodox architecture. At that time the book became a sensation.
