[R. 18(30).11.1876, farm Zilaiskalns, now Riga Latvian SSR], Hero of Socialist Labor (1971), people's artist of the USSR (1957), member of FSSR (1947). Studied at the school of Baron Stieglitz in St. Petersburg (1893-1899; he was a circle "Rukis" — "Worker"), then in Paris (1899-1901) in the Studio of Auguste Rodin (E. A. Bourdelle, etc.). In 1903-07 he taught at the industrial art school in Ekaterinburg (now Sverdlovsk), where he studied at Z. I. D. Shadr. In 1907-09 he lived in Florence, 1910 — in St. Petersburg. In 1918-1919 he participated in the realization of Lenin's plan of monumental propaganda. (monument to N. G. Chernyshevsky, O Forms in Petrograd, not preserved). From 1920 in Riga; in 1944-58 head of the sculpture Department (Professor) at the Academy of arts of the Latvian SSR. The disciples, V. K., Alberg, M. L. Davydova-Medine etc. creativity and teaching C had a great influence on the development of Latvian sculpture. We created a lot of portraits (A. kirchenstein, gypsum, 1946, F. Blumbaha, terracotta, 1956, K. Baron, bronze, 1967, all at the Art Museum of the Latvian SSR, Riga), more than 20 gravestones (J. Bail, granite, 1930, O. Latsis, granite, 1945, both in Riga), R. Blaumanis monuments in Riga (granite, 1929) and A. Kronvalda in Sigulda (bronze, 1938), the works of animalistic genre, medal. Awarded 2 orders of Lenin, 2 other orders and medals.
