Käthe Kollwitz — Kathe (it. Käthe Kollwitz, born. Schmidt, July 8, 1867, königsberg — April 22, 1945, Moritzburg, Saxony) is a German painter, graphic and sculptor, graduate of the Konigsberg Academy of arts.
Käthe was born in a family of Communists. Her teachers were, Stauffer-Bern in Berlin (1885-1886) and Herterich in Munich (1888-1889). In 1919-1933 he was Professor at the Berlin Academy of arts. She became the first woman Professor in this institution, but in 1933 he was expelled by the Nazis.
During the First world war, the artist lost her son; all her work is painted in a dark tragic tone.
In 1927 he visited the Soviet Union.
