Tate Galleries (London) presents an exhibition
"Francis Bacon, Lucien Freud and the London School". Previously, the exhibition was held in London, Los Angeles, Malaga and Aarhus and received more than 600 thousand spectators.
The exhibition will feature the best masters of contemporary British art: Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, R. B. China, Leon Kossof, Lucien Freud, Michael Andrews; as well as Ewan Aglow, David Bomberg, William Coldstream and Paula Regou, whose working methods make it possible to classify them as a London school of painting. The exhibition includes more than 80 paintings and graphic works from the collection of the Tate Gallery.
The term London School was coined by artist R. B. China in 1976. In contrast to abstractionism and conceptualism, masters of the London School developed the tradition of figurative painting. Not trying to guess the direction of the development of current artistic trends, these artists saw their task in conveying the real, “cruel” sides of life, in expressing sensually tangible reality.
The focus of the London School of Artists is on the human body, the transfer of its fragility and at the same time vitality.
Along with the appeal to the human figure for the artists of the London school is characterized by interest in the landscape genre. The images of London created by them are connected with personal stories and the subjective perception of the city, in the metaphorical sense they turn out to be a kind of existential self-portraits of their authors.
Painting how deeply the autobiographical process is what interested the artists represented at this exhibition. They developed complex plots, focusing on the dynamics and aesthetics of social relations, created images based on literary sources, photographs and works by other artists.
At the exhibition, for the first time, the Russian audience will have the opportunity to get acquainted with such a unique and significant chapter in the history of modern British art.
