Edward Hopper and the American Hotel

Connoisseurs of American artist Edward Hopper will have the opportunity to physically feel the fullness of alienation inherent in his paintings. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts invites visitors to spend the night literally inside one of its interiors.

The struggle for attention and money of visitors forces the world museums to come up with more and more unexpected actions. In October 2019, a number of events will be held at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, centered around the exhibition Edward Hopper and the American Hotel. One of the main exhibits on it will be the painting “Western Motel” (1965) - not only the original work, but also its three-dimensional recreation.

The exhibition will feature more than sixty Hopper works provided by public and private collections. All of them reflect the artist’s interest in hotels, motels and other similar establishments. The institute bought one of the paintings, “House at Sunset” (1935), in 1953, when the artist was a member of the jury of the Museum Biennale (fifteen years earlier, he was vice president of a two-year exhibition at the museum).
