Shemyakin. Transformations. Metasearch

Exhibition 19 May − 23 October 2021
Mikhail Shemyakin Center, St. Petersburg holds an exhibition "Shemyakin. Transformations. The Metapointer.".

The works of the master presented in the exhibition show the audience: the theme of transformation in the work of Mikhail Shemyakin occupies a special place. At different times the artist's attention was attracted by Chinese hieroglyphs, ancient Greek sculpture, architectural plans, topographic maps, botanical drawings, as well as the works of old and new masters, such as Diego Velazquez, Giovanni Tiepolo, Vasily Kandinsky, Pavel Filonov, Marc Chagall and others.

In particular, the dialogue of the artist with the famous polystylist Pablo Picasso is explained, on the one hand, by their common desire to search for the archetypal form in art, and on the other hand, by their constant thirst for innovation. It is known that painting and sculpture Picasso is largely based on the study of African and oceanic sculpture, which was biased for the European art of the time. It is also often at the origins of Shemyakin's work, but not only. Developing his artistic language, the artist at various times turned to Russian icons, and to the lubok, and in general, was much engaged in the analysis of the culture of different epochs and peoples. But each time overcoming more and more new boundaries his art became universal.
