Non-Human. Popov Sisters

Exhibition 3 February − 10 May 2022
Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art invites you to visit an exhibition of futuristic dolls Catherine and Elena Popov's Non-Human.

Visitors will be able to see provocative creatures whose images are regularly published in the pages of Vogue, The New York Times, HuffPost and Infringe; appreciate the contemporary art and fashion industry phenomenon that captivated Jean-Paul Gaultier, photographer Nick Knight, Louis Vuitton shoe designer Fabrizio Viti, singers Grimes and FKA Twigs.

If the word "doll" conjures up images of a rubber baby doll, a barbie fashionista, or a painted doll, be warned: the Non-human exhibition may shock you. The work of sisters Katya and Lena Popovs is a radically different view of what a doll can be. Whatever image the artists choose for their dolls: seductive widows, schoolgirls tattooed to look like gzhel, or cybergirls, each of them has an aesthetic ideal. However, this ideal is far from being standard: for the Popov sisters, there is no line between the beautiful and the ugly, the forbidden and the permitted, the human and the inhuman.
