Picasso - El Greco

Exhibition 11 June − 25 September 2022
Basel Museum of Art invites you to visit a large-scale exhibition "Picasso - El Greco.".

The exhibition includes masterpieces by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and El Greco (1541-1614) from collections in museums around the world. About 40 juxtapositions of paintings by both artists trace a dialogue-opposition that is one of the most fascinating in the history of art.

Domenikos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco, achieved considerable fame in his new homeland of Toledo for his unique style of painting. Soon after his death, however, he was forgotten. Only at the turn of the 20th century did the El Greco Renaissance occur, with the young Pablo Picasso at the forefront. The exhibition shows that Picasso engaged with El Greco more intensely and longer than previously thought: this is evident in Picasso's cubist paintings, in his works of the 1930s and 1940s, and even late in life he was still referring to the old master. The exhibition not only offers a new perspective on Picasso and El Greco, but also provides insight into the importance of this constellation for the development of twentieth-century avant-garde art.
