The National Museum of Roman Art is an institution with a very long history. With more than 175 years, it dates back to a small local collection that, due to the importance of the emeritense site, grew until it was elevated to the category of national and managed to be housed in a new building where to exhibit, with the dignity they deserve, their collections. Its content and activities revolve around the Roman period, which is the focus of the permanent exhibition at its main headquarters. In spite of this, the importance of Mérida's role at the end of Antiquity, when it was the first capital of Spain, as well as during the Visigothic period and the beginning of the Middle Ages, mark the future aspirations of our Institution, with the creation of a new building to house the collections associated with these historical periods.
