(1882/1883, Riga – 1973, Moscow)

Watercolorist, Illustrator of books. Since childhood suffered from a severe form of autism. Talking and drawing started as a result of strong emotional shock from visiting the circus Ciniselli. In 1902 to 1903 he studied at Maguse M. P. Klodt and V. N. Baksheeva, then a couple of years in private academies in Munich. Was friendly with M. Larionov, and participated in many acclaimed exhibitions of "Blue rose" and "Jack of diamonds", joined the "Union of youth". He was a member of "Makovets", "Society of Moscow artists", AHRR. Since the end 1920-x of years working almost exclusively in watercolors, depicting the world of poetic visions and dreams, shaky extravaganzas centered around images of the circus, music and flowers. In 1937, in the heat of the struggle against dissent in art, the artist was added to the "gang of formalists" ("three f": Falk, Favorsky, Fonvizin). Since the evacuation in Kazakhstan (1943, Karaganda), where Fonvizin was sent for his German origin, the artist often turned to the landscape. Exhibited the same

mostly portraits, mostly of Actresses – Babanova, Zerkalova, Glizer, boguslawska, Levitina, Tikhomirnova, Plisetskaya...

A. V. Fonvizin was born in the family gamekeeper. Started in 1901, studying at the Moscow school of painting, but was expelled along with two friends, M. F. Larionov and Sergei Sudeikin, the device is not authorized by the authorities of the exhibition. In the years 1904-06 he continued his education in Germany, in private workshops in Munich. In the first decade of the century was an active and visible participant in high-profile exhibitions such as "Blue rose", "Wreath" Salons "Golden fleece", "Wreath-Stefanos", "World of art". In the 1920s, became a member of the Association "Jack of diamonds", taught in the studios of the Tambov Proletkult in Nizhny Novgorod art College. At an early period in his career he worked in the mainstream of symbolism, in the style of the so-called lyrical primitive. Paintings Fonvizina that time have a refined palette. From them seemed to emanate a mysterious flickering light that creates a certain mental state. These are his "Bride" (1902), "Leda", "Composition with figure of Christ" (both 1904). Today, however, Fonvizin better known as an unsurpassed virtuoso of watercolor painting. By the 1930s, he finally chose a major and favorite since watercolor technique, revealed the romantically-raised Stroy of his art, outlined a range of topics associated with the festive images of theater and circus and immersed in a rosy haze of childhood memories. From color pencil without training, he writes from nature air-a light floral still lifes, melting in the mist landscapes, but mostly portraits, preferring female models. His favorite heroine - the actress, often in theatrical costumes associated with a particular role, immersed in a festive atmosphere of emotional scenes ("Portrait of D. V. Zerkalova," "Portrait of Yu. s. Glaser", both 1940, and others). And children love the circus and dictated to him countless, not nature, and imagination generated color sketches elegant equestrians (series "Circus", 1940-70-e). Romantic mist covered melting into the haze of color images of popular romances (series "Songs and romances", 1940-60-e), childhood memories of provincial life ("Cabs", 1940). It also adjoins the best of his work for the book. However, neither improvised, as if careless freedom of watercolor letters or romantic dreaminess of his images are not answered in the 1930s and 1940s official art installations, and because creativity Fonvizin was subjected at the time of the attacks in the press. And during the war he was for a time exiled to Kazakhstan for the German origin. And yet the artist remained consistently true to the nature of his gift, to the end of life developed and varied all the same favorite motifs.
