People's artist of the RSFSR (1944). The author of the book "the Artist movie" (1930, together. with N. Kalinin), a series of publications in film journals. He was born in Odessa. In 1900-1903 — apprentice, assistant in an art workshop, volunteer at the Odessa art school. In 1903-1913 — assistant to the artist, the artist-designer in drama theatres Nikolayev, Kherson, Simferopol, etc. In 1913-1915 artist T/D "V. Vengerov and Vladimir Gardin" in 1915-1918, artist and Director of Joint stock company "Biofilm" in 1918-1921 — Atelier "Rus" M. mills (now to/with it. Gorky). Since 1924 — teacher, since 1925 a teacher of GTK (now VGIK).
