Carl Bergamasco, a native of Turin, appeared in St. Petersburg in 1848, and received an actor of the Imperial theatre to a French company. He got hurt (during the performance dropped beam and decorative) and was "dismissed from the Board".

In 1858 he received the title of "class artist in painting watercolor landscape". Probably at this time he was studying photography (and possibly earlier). In 1863 he was officially allowed to be called "photographer of the Imperial theatres" on condition that "Bergamasco pledged to be donated to the Directorate of archive and reference an album of portraits of artists in all suits of the new ballets and operas, and supplied to the local stage."

Bergamasco was very fashionable, expensive master and one of the leading portrait painters of St. Petersburg. In 1865, the magazine "Photographer" said that "Bergamasco appointed photographer to His Imperial Highness Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich" (older), which was immediately reflected on letterhead of the photographer. With 1865 begins his fame in all the exhibitions where he gets awards and medals: Berlin 1865, Paris 1867, Hamburg -1868, Groening — 1869, St. Petersburg — 1870, Vienna 1873, London 1874, Philadelphia 1876 (these guidelines help you work with Dating photos).

V. Mikhnevich in 1884 in a satirical work where he gave 1000 humorous caricature of the characteristics of his contemporaries wrote about the photographer: "Bergamasco fashion photographer, especially beloved Adonis of both sexes, and not in vain: Bergamasco, very carefree about the similarities of the portraits, all the ladies depicts beauties and all molodyaschihsya old men full of vigor, blooming great. But the price pulls Mr. Bergamasco quite artistic." The success of the photographer accompanied throughout its activities. In the newspaper "New time" Bergamasco gave the announcement of the cessation of his work: "K. Bergamasco has the honor to notify its customers that due to the stop fotograficheskikh of classes 1st July, 1891, all statements regarding the non-granting of orders will be accepted and issued prior to the aforesaid period". Paid advertising on the activities of the photos came from 1892 to 1896.

On the 66th year of life, Karl Bergamasco died. He was buried in the Evangelical St. Petersburg on the Smolensk cemetery.
