Ivan Petrovich Pozhalostin (25 may 1837, the village Egoldaevo, Ryazan province — December 25, 1909) — Russian artist — engraver-uranist, master of engravings. His work is characterized by careful study and portrayal of nature, the expression of scenes of genre in the language of classical engraving. He created gallery of portraits of cultural figures and art.
A native of the peasants, was an orphan. From childhood he showed a talent for drawing. At the age of 13 was given to an educational school for orphans in Ryazan. Along with his studies in College, studied drawing at the home of local school teacher N. S. Ivanov. This artist had a great influence on him.
After graduation, Pozhalostin a short time worked as a parish clerk in Solotcha. Here he perfected the art of drawing with N. S. Efimov, the future artist, copying drawings from the "Russian art sheet", published by academician V. M. Timm. He was especially attracted to the types of Russian soldiers, members of the Crimean war.
In 1857 the place with Efimov went to study at the Academy of arts in class of Professor F. I. Jordan, where he studied until 1868. At the Academy of fine arts studied at F. I. Jordan, and B. P. Villevalde, P. M. Shamshina, T. A. Markova, T. A. Neff.
In the school's talent skilled master-engraver. For work performed in the engraving class at the Academy of fine arts, he was repeatedly awarded medals. Was awarded 2nd silver medal for work "Pluto" (copy-Char); was awarded a Large silver medal for the "portrait of Cardinal de La Rochefoucauld" (original Adelinka); he performed the engraving on copper — portrait of Metropolitan Philaret of Moscow (the title of artist 3rd degree), over etching "the Bathers the Roman soldiers" (the drawing of Michelangelo), he worked for about a year.
The Academy Pozhalostin began to work on portraits. The love that remains for life. They made portraits of Ivan the terrible (with works of N. I. Utkin), Empress Maria Fedorovna.
His cutter belong the portraits of figures of literature and art: G. R. Derzhavin, V. A. Zhukovsky, K. P. Bryullov, F. G. Solntsev, I. A. Goncharov, I. S. Turgenev, N. A. Nekrasova, V. G. Belinsky, K. N. Batiushkov, D. A. Rovinsky, A. S. Khomyakov and others.
In 1868 he graduated from the Academy of fine arts, received the title of class artist 1-th degree.
In 1871, after an engraving "Christ carrying the cross" by L. Carracci, he was awarded the degree of academician.
As a pensioner of the Academy of arts, Pozhalostin studied in Paris and London from 1872 to 1874 years working on a large engraving of a painting by G. I. Ugryumova "Jan UNMOVIC stops raging bull" and studying the techniques of printing engravings and various ways of engraving.
In 1875 Pozhalostin has created a superb engraving of a painting by Vasily Perov "Birder". Work pozhalostina dispersed throughout Russia, he received a lot of orders from publishers. Pozhalostina accompany fame and success.
From 1883 to 1892 was an adjunct Professor of the Academy of arts in 1892 he became a Professor. In that position he worked for two years. With the reorganization of the Academy and the elimination of class engraving, he was dismissed.
Pozhalostin moved with his family to live in Ryazan, and then settled in Solotcha. Here he began work on the engraving for the film A. I. Korzukhin "Holiday in the village", but disease and death cut short his work.
Pozhalostin died on 25 Dec 1909 and was buried on the territory of the Ryazan Kremlin, near the graves of Polonsky and Hosinski.
