He was born in the town of Graivoron, Kursk province, January 1 (14), 1910 (now Belgorod region). His drawing abilities appeared in early childhood. The first teacher of the future artist was his father Orlov Sergey Alexandrovich (1886-1951), who was educated in the famous Kiev drawing school of artist Murashko N.I. and in the Penza Art School at the famous traveling painter Savitsky K.A. The artist's grandfather was an icon painter, serf of Count Sheremetiev. He graduated in 1932 from Kharkov Art School and in 1933 moved with his family to Taganrog, where he taught drawing in the 13th and 14th city schools. The artist's father taught at the 10th city school, at the art studio and at the Taganrog Teachers' Institute. He worked in Taganrog branch of the All-Russian cooperative association "Artist" (Vsekohudozhudozhnik) since 1934. Since 1935 participated in city and since 1937 in regional art exhibitions. The work of the artist "Parachutistka" was critically noted in an article on the exhibition of city artists in the newspaper "Taganrogskaya Pravda" on June 30, 1936. The artist was accused of "insufficiency of artistic means in reflecting the new relations of socialist reality". Participant of national art exhibitions in 1940 and 1946. During the occupation of Taganrog in the Great Patriotic War he was taken for forced labor to Germany, where he was forced to work as a laborer in a factory until the end of the war as an Ostarbeiter. Returning to Taganrog after the war, he continued to work in the Taganrog branch of the "Vsekohudozhudozhnik" partnership. The war trials experienced by the artist were reflected in the cycle of works "In fascist captivity", which was demonstrated in 1946 at the first post-war city art exhibition. In 1946, the artist was accepted as a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR and expelled three years later for having been in German captivity. After 1953 the artist was offered to be reinstated as a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR, but he refused. In the 1970s he was a member of the city creative association "Artist", created at the Palace of Culture named after Lenin. Lenin. The painting "In his native land" (1950), which among several works of the artist was selected by representatives of the trading house "Christie's" for the auction in 1997 in Great Britain and sold (for 10835$), was shown at the seventh exhibition of works by artists of the Rostov region. This work - a vivid example of socialist realism of the 1950s, which is better and timely assessed by foreign experts than their own at home. In 1997, several works by V.S. Orlov (among them - a painting "In his native land") was presented and sold at the auction "Christie's", . Vasily Orlov celebrated his centenary with a personal exhibition in the Taganrog Art Museum. In 2010, Vasily Orlov was admitted to the Union of Artists of Russia. In 2010 the artist was awarded the title "Honorary Member of the Union of Artists of Russia". He worked in the genre of landscape, portrait, genre painting and still life. The artist created a large number of works as oil, and watercolor, gouache, mixed technique, pencil. Achieving expressiveness, the artist experimented a lot, combining even in one work of different materials and methods of use (for example, wrote watercolor on levkas). The horizontally elongated format of the composition, favored by him, acquired sharpness and dynamism. The graphic sophistication of the drawing was intensified and enriched by the decorative nature of the color solution. Small in size works of the artist fascinate with the harmony of color, the fullness of the emotional, poetic feeling expressed in them. Long way of the artist in the art is marked by a variety of searches. In the works are present and romantic pathos, and philosophical understanding of life and nature.
