Li was born in Jiangsu province — one of the centers of Catholic missionary of the time. Soon after 1675 was baptized with the name Simon Xavier. 50 years after the death of his mother and wife, he entered the Jesuit novitiate in Macau (1682), and six years later was ordained to the priesthood the first Bishop-Chinese, Gregory Lo, Vanessaa OP (1615-1690), and 30 years a priest. Died in Shanghai in 1718. Poetic works of Lee was published only after his death. From a young age studied painting, Li belongs to the "six masters" of the early period of the Qing dynasty.
