Nikolai Shestopalov, a famous Russian Soviet artist, painter, master of watercolors and etchings, book Illustrator. The author of monumental works and paintings on military and historical subjects, portraits, landscapes, genre compositions.
Born in the village Bessonova Penza province. He studied at the school of the Petersburg society for the encouragement of artists, and then in the Studio of Princess M. K. Tenisheva, where he was taught by Ilya Repin. At the same time Nikolai Shestopalov studied etching at the Academy of arts under Professor V. V. Matai.
During the revolution of 1905 was one of the founders of the first revolutionary satirical magazine "the Spectator". In 1906 went to Munich, where he worked with Professor G. Knerr. On his return to St. Petersburg became a participant of exhibitions "Spring", New society of travelling art exhibitions "World of art".
A member of the AHR with its Foundation (1922), a member of all of its exhibitions. Participated in exhibitions to mark the fifth anniversary and a decade of the red army. Member of Moscow Union of artists SINCE 1933.
Nikolay Shestopalov – pupil Ilya Repin – received fame and recognition in the 1900-1920 years. In pre-revolutionary time Shestopalov participated in exhibitions Association "World of art" and actively worked in the field of satirical graphics.
After the revolution, in 1920-e years he turned to historical-revolutionary genre, and he exposed his works at all exhibitions of the Association of artists of revolutionary Russia (AHRR) since its founding.
Nikolay Ivanovich Shestopalov received from official art clearly defined place in the history of Soviet art as a recognized book artist, as a writer of sketches for the Soviet pre-war postcards glorifying heroic work.
Historians seemed to forget about teaching artist in Munich, about his participation in the exhibitions "World of art", in the artistic life of Russia in the second decade of the twentieth century.
Nikolay Shestopalov talks with the Russian symbolists and Impressionists, uses their favorite topics, while remaining committed to academic painting traditions. In this atmosphere born typical "Shestopalova" images of a bygone Russia.
And even landscapes show the twenties and thirties not so much reflect the harsh Soviet reality and recreate the pre-revolutionary way. The artist throughout the creative journey is constantly drawn to the pictures of the Russian provinces.
Painting Shestopalova the mid-20th century thematically returns to the legacy of the "world of art" – colleagues and companions of his youth; it is the provincial estates, ruined churches and monasteries, written "in orovsky" pasty, almost illusory.
Nikolay Shestopalov has participated in more than 80 exhibitions of his works are in the collections of the State Russian Museum, the Central Museum of the red army, the State Museum of revolution of USSR and other Museum collections.
In the summer of 2016 in the Russian Museum with the participation of the Gallery "vellum" was the first large-scale retrospective of the works of Nikolay Shestopal.
