Sergey Obraztsov was born on June 22 (July 5), 1901 in Moscow. His father, V. N. Obraztsov, was a railway engineer (later an academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences), his mother was a teacher. After graduating from a real school, K. P. Voskresensky in 1918-1926 he studied at VHUTEMAS in the painting department, then at the graphics department (student of AE Arkhipov and V. A. Favorsky). In 1922-1930 he was an actor of the Musical Studio of the Moscow Art Theater (since 1926 - the Musical Theater of the People's Artist of the Republic V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko, now the Moscow Musical Theater named after K.S. Stanislavsky and V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko), in 1930-1936 - actor of the Moscow Art Theater 2. Performed mainly acutecharacter roles (the Old Man - "Lysistrata" by Aristophanes, Jester - "Twelfth Night" by Shakespeare, etc.). In 1920, he first began to speak with theater puppets. By the middle of the 1930s, he gained fame as a variety artist, staging numbers with puppets in the parodic style of "romances with puppets. The object of his parodies was vulgarity, typical for the performance of some variety actors, and philistine bourgeoisness ("Minutochka", "We only know each other, how strange", "Pour the glass", "We sat with you", "Habanera", etc.). During this period he also staged several puppet performances in the genre of vaudeville. In 1931 he created the Central Puppet Theater in Moscow, which he directed until the end of his life. He staged over 70 performances for children and adults. Since 1948 he toured abroad with the theater. Since 1956 he also worked in movies as a script writer and director, the creator of the genre of documentary cinema. In the same year at the film studio "Soyuzmultfilm" together with G. Natanson he created a full-length puppet cartoon "Heavenly creature". Since 1935 he was engaged in pedagogical work (from 1973 he was professor of GITIS). From 1976 to 1984 he was President of the International Union of Puppeteers (UNIMA) (since 1984 he was its Honorary President) and the Center Council of this organization (since 1958). Corresponding member of the Berlin Academy of Arts (since 1955). Collected exotic dolls. His collection is the biggest in Russia and one of the biggest in the world. He was not a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Sergei Vladimirovich Obraztsov died on May 8 (according to other sources - March 8), 1992 at the age of 91 in Moscow.
