Descriptif de la toile «A Portrait Of Matisse»

Derain painted the portrait of Henri Matisse, and Matisse wrote portrait of Andre Derain. All this happened prior to the birth of the Fauve summer of 1905. Deren at the invitation of the senior comrade visited Matissov in Collioure, a small fishing town on the coast of the Mediterranean sea. In conversations, at work, in the fury of nature and colors born "art of the wild".

Under the guidance of Matisse Derain opened the world of color and was so inspired by the prospects that called all his past experiences is ridiculous. Matisse in this painting seems to be not written, he seemed to mould into color, like Derain sculpted his face and the background colors. Dense, thick warm orange, blue-green and pink spots forming the face of the artist. The contrast of the bright sides of the face and shaded blue-green lends a monumentality. Black and brown densely strokes to create the hair and beard, shirt written a cool blue and blue flowers. Tube strip bright Carmine, background – wide green and yellow brushstrokes. The portrait has almost no lines – except that the ear and the shoulder to the right slightly rounded contour so created exclusively color.

In the eyes of Matisse glasses, slim temple tips visible on the temples. His eyes are calm, in-depth in itself. Snorkel and goggles – peculiar characters of the specific provisions of Matisse, his status as a master among younger colleagues on the Fauvism.

Matisse occupies all the space of a portrait head even partially cut off, which symbolizes the scale of the figure not in the sense of its physical dimensions. Place depicted on canvas Derain quite forces but Matisse is outside of the canvas.

"A portrait of Matisse" realistic certainly will not be called. But the amazing thing – not to know it, the Maestro is impossible.
