Born in Riga. He studied at the Academy of arts of the Latvian SSR in Riga (1952-59).
Teaches there (from 1964).
His life-affirming paintings on themes of life of the Latvian collective farms ("In the dark", "the bath," both 1957, property of the Art Fund of the USSR; "Dinner on the farm", 1964, property of the Art Foundation of the Latvian SSR) is inherent in the masculine romance of images, compositional dynamics, plastic generality, restraint greenish-ochre tones.
In the recent works of B. ("Fishing Harbor", 1967) increases the desire for the emotional acuity of rhythm and color.

In 1946 – 47 years the register for the art Studio of the Riga Palace of pioneers, 1947 – 1952 he studied at the Riga art school of J. Rozentals. In 1959, he graduated from Department of painting at the Latvian State Academy of arts with the thesis "Rafters" (under E. Kalninsh).
The artist worked in the magazine "Dadzis" (1957), in the plant "Māksla" (1959 – 60), was a lecturer (1963), associate Professor (1977) and Professor (since 1986) of the Latvian Academy of arts.
In exhibitions B. Berzins participated since 1955.

A commemorative exhibition is organized in Riga (2003).
He was a member of the Union of artists since 1961 has worked in the Art Fund, where he held senior positions.
In 1988, the artist chosen corresponding member of the Academy of arts of the USSR and head of the creative workshop of painting in Riga.
