In the 1850s he studied at St. Petersburg Academy of arts under B. P. Villevalde. Academician from 1861. Influenced by P. A. Fedotov appealed to the creation of works dedicated to the "little man", the story in which sh was developed with a certain directness and demonstrative ("Temptation", 1856 or 1857, the Tretyakov gallery, Moscow; "Forced marriage", Russian Museum, Leningrad).
