Student of the Academy of fine Arts, where he was considered the disciple of the Professor of A. T. Markov, and received for his success all the medals, including the Grand gold, which was awarded to him in 1847 for his painting "Tolkuchy market." Being thereupon sent at public expense for six years abroad, he spent only two years within the remaining years of his pensionerstva traveled to Russia, studying folksy way of life, the image of which became his specialty from a young age. In particular, he got acquainted with the types and customs of the inhabitants of the southern provinces and the Baltic region. In 1853, for the painting "Drinking house" received the title of academician, and then appeared before the audience with his works very rarely, mainly teaching drawing.
