Born in Yekaterinoslav (now Dnepropetrovsk). In 1911-1920 studied at the Institute of civil engineers, 1917-1923, worked at the State free art studios (b. Academy of fine Arts) with I. A. Fomin.

In the 1920-ies — 1930-ies taught at the Polytechnic Institute and the Leningrad Institute of engineers public works. 1934 British led design workshop at the "Lenproject Institute", 1937-1950 he was head of the Leningrad branch of the Academy of architecture of the USSR.

From mid-1920-ies, Gegello was actively involved in the construction of a new Leningrad. Together with A. S. Nikolsky and G. A. Simonov, he was the author of the development of Tractor street (1925-1927) and "Seraphim plot" (1925-1929) — first in Leningrad housing complexes for the workers.

The exhibition in the Engineering building are exhibited the plans of the Moscow Prospekt, near the plant "electric power"(1947), the development district in the Central district (1946-1947), low-rise construction in the village Volkova (1946-1947), the building of the Holy lane of a big-block houses (1951).

A. I. Gegello has participated in architectural competitions. The exhibition demonstrates the competitive projects of building a public restroom (1920), the House of culture named after M. Gorky (1925, Grand Prix of the International exhibition in Paris, 1937), the crematoria buildings in the Alexander Nevsky monastery (1926 — 1927), the House of Soviets in Leningrad (1936).

Of particular interest are projects for public buildings new type of job clubs, which are based on the principles of constructivism: the House of culture in the Vyborg district (1927);

House of culture named after M. Gorky (1925), where for the first time in Soviet architecture implemented the idea of a amphitheatrically build the auditorium. Original compositional solutions feature the building of the hospital named after S. P. Botkin (1927-1930), and the House of technical studies (1931-1932).

In the mid 1930-ies, when Soviet architecture on the path of "development of the classical heritage", in the works of A. I. Gegello, there has been a trend away from the forms of constructivism. This is evidenced by the project of the cinema "Giant" (1933), built in the neoclassical style.

In 1950, Gegello was elected Vice-President of the Academy of architecture of the USSR and moved to Moscow. 1956 — Honorary member of the Academy of architecture of the USSR. The author of the book "creative experience" (1962).
