Native village monastyrshchina Nizhyn uyezd, Chernigov province. He received his General education in the St. Petersburg Peter and Paul German school. He studied at the Imperial Academy of arts (1850-1854).. S. Pimenov and P. K. Klodt. Lived in Italy, worked in Rome and Florence (1854-1872), then in St. Petersburg. Great attention was paid to the portrait, memorial and genre sculpture. Academician of the sculpture (1868) for the three reliefs of the family members of P. A. Kochubei. Participated in competition of projects of the monument to A. S. Pushkin (1870). The author of the tombstones of A. I. Herzen (1873, nice), monuments to M. V. Lomonosov (1892, St. Petersburg) and Shevchenko (1870-1871, Chernihiv), portraits of artists N. N. GE (gypsum, 1873), V. E. Makovsky (plaster, 1894), sculpture "Italian", "bather", "Ermak", etc.
