ABSTRACT TO THE EXHIBITION "ALEXANDER NEVSKY IN THE FINE ARTS. TO THE 800TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PRINCE'S BIRTH"
"From the moment of the canonization in 1847 and up to the beginning of XX century Alexander Nevskiy was more often represented on icons and historical cloths as the sacred warrior. Only on the first images of XVI-XVII centuries he is represented in monastic schema, further such icons were extremely rare. The artists were inspired by the prince's heroic image. The combination of masculinity and sanctity, a fine chivalrous countenance and prayerful piety we see on the icons from the Rybinsk Museum-Reserve, the Yaroslavl Art Museum, the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum. The last work of the famous academician of painting V.K. Shebuev is also interesting because in the sublime image one can see some softened features of Emperor Nicholas I. Nowadays the search for national identity guides the masters of fine arts to the study of the heroic pages of Russian history, and also the life and exploits of the Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky. The icons created by Irina Vinichenko and Marina Gracheva continue the best traditions of ancient Russian art. Historical genre in the spirit of Russian academism is successfully mastered by Fedor Fedorov. On his canvas "Take care of this land" painter Dmitry Zarva shows the pure soul of the prince as a child, who for the first time reveals the beauty of his native land. At the same time, in Sergei Marchenko's painting "Truth Behind Us!" we see the hero dragging the warriors behind him to meet the danger. Some of the listed works - works of M. Gracheva, D. Zarva and S. Marchenko - were created specially for the anniversary of Alexander Nevsky and are shown for the first time. Especially noteworthy are landscapes by an outstanding painter Peter Ossovsky. A native of Pskov region, he has forever imprinted in his heart the harsh beauty of the region. This is the very beauty that inspired the exploits of the Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky and continues to inspire us to this day".
