Dedication to Georges Rouault

L'exposition 9 juillet − 3 octobre 2021
Georges Pompidou National Centre for Arts and Culture holds an exhibition "Dedication to Georges Rouault".

The exhibition commemorates the 150th anniversary of the great artist's birth and introduces visitors to one of the largest collections of his work.

Georges Rouault began painting his first Phillys in 1902, renting a studio near Place Clichy, inviting posing prostitutes in exchange for the warmth of the room. The artist sensed the models - in their naked forms, their eyes reflected in the mirror, marked by an anxiety that contradicts the bold provocative pose. Similarly, the author combines a caricatured line reminiscent of Honoré Daumier and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec with the sensual dignity of the models and contrasting colors. The artist does not condemn, but reveals both the touching splendor of a woman's body and her physical and moral suffering.
