The Kunsthalle Rotterdam proudly presents an extensive exhibition
"Calder Today."The first in Europe to explore the master's enduring and unmistakable influence on contemporary art.
Visitors will see more than twenty sculptures by Alexander Calder, as well as works by ten well-known contemporary artists: Olafur Eliasson, Gilvinas Kempinas, Simone Lee, Ernesto Neto, Carsten Nicolai, Aki Sasamoto, Roman Sinje, Monika Sosnovska, Sara Sze and Rirkrit Tiravanija.
Mysterious, gravity-defying installations, sculptures that evoke extraordinary optical sensations, and art that touches all the senses - all of this generates genuine interest and establishes a strong, fascinating and inexplicable connection to the author's art.
Alex Calder (USA, 1898-1976) initiated many revolutionary artistic innovations. In his quest to transcend the three spatial dimensions - making the fourth dimension of time a prominent and indispensable element of his work - Calder succeeded in transforming the modern understanding of sculpture. He was the first to remove a sculpture from its pedestal and suspend it in the air. With his dynamic mobile devices that could move freely in space, he was one of the initiators - along with artists such as Marcel Duchamp and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy - of the kinetic art movement, which revolutionized the static nature of art in the early twentieth century. Alexander Calder became a source of inspiration for later generations of artists.
