Masterpieces of the Russian Museum. "Smolyan Girls" by Dmitry Levitsky

The State Historical Museum (SHM) presents an exhibition "Masterpieces of the Russian Museum. "Smolyan Girls" by Dmitry Levitsky".

The exposition is based on a series of portraits from the Smolyan Girls cycle by Dmitry Grigoryevich Levitsky, a famous Russian artist of the second half of the 18th century. In addition to the portraits, the exposition is complemented by a number of works: portraits of the founders of the Smolny Institute - Catherine the Great and I. I. Betsky, items of applied art and historical photographs. All in all, the exhibition features over 90 items from the collection of the Russian Museum.

The Smolyan women portrait series has never completely left the permanent exposition of the Russian Museum, and sometimes individual portraits were loaned for temporary exhibitions. The Historical Museum for the first time exhibits all seven portraits of the Smolny Girls outside the walls of the Russian Museum in their entirety. A separate section of the exhibition features portraits from the album of famous St. Petersburg photographer K. K. Bulla about the Smolny Institute. They allow us to see the environment in which the students lived and feel the spirit of discipline, tireless work and creativity that prevailed in the institute's classrooms.
