Alexandra Alexandrovna Exter (1882-1949), artist and designer, was a famous representative of the Russian avant-garde. Exter was perhaps the most experimental artist of the avant-garde. She freely drew inspiration from other cultures and sources to develop her own, unique style. In her life she held a variety of positions, from working in rural craft cooperatives in peasant communities to leading theatrical artists in many Moscow, St. Petersburg, Paris and other theaters of her time.
In 1901-1903 and 1906-1907, Exter studied at the Kiev Art School. In the course of 1907-1914, between Kiev, Moscow and St. Petersburg she was a promoter of new ideas of European art among the Russian avant-garde. In Paris she became friends with Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, Guillaume Apollinaire, and collaborated with the Italian futurists. She was the author of one of the first articles in Russia on Cubism. After the October Revolution in 1924 she emigrated to France.
