In 1868-1870 traveled to Italy; in 1872-1873 he lived in Rome, Venice; 1882-1894 in Paris. Also visited Belgium, Holland, lake Herrensee (1873), Olevano Italy (1875). The summer of 1878, 1880-1881 held in Austria (in mill, Svilosa, Consdorf) with his friend and biographer Carl Hagemeister. From 1894 he lived in Vienna.
