Vladimirovich Alpatov

(December 10, 1902, Moscow — may 9, 1986, ibid) — Russian art historian, member of the Academy of arts of the USSR (1954), honored artist of the RSFSR (1958). Laureate of the State prize of the USSR (1974).

He studied at the Department of theory and history of art of the historical-philological faculty of Moscow state University (1919-1921); among his teachers B. R. Vipper and A. G. Gabrichevsky. In 1921-1923. Alpatov worked at the Museum of fine arts; in 1923-1930 worked at the Institute of archaeology and art history RANION. In 1925 he defended a thesis on the history of ancient art; his doctoral dissertation (1940) was the monograph "the Italian art of the age of Dante and Giotto" (1939). Since 1943 Professor of the Moscow art Institute named after V. I. Surikov.
