The son of the artist-lover of a merchant family.

In 1872-1881. studied at the Moscow school of painting, sculpture and architecture (Academy of arts) E. S. Sorokin and one of the leading Itinerants Vasily Perov. During the training period was twice awarded the Small Silver medals (1878, 1881).

In the early 1880s, he attended the drawing evenings in the Studio of I. E. Repin.

In 1901 he joined the Moscow art lovers society, which included the famous collector Pavel Tretyakov acquired several works Matveyev, including one of the best paintings of "Twilight" (1891).

In the 1900's was art critic in the newspaper "Russian gold leaf".

In the history of Russian art, Nikolai Sergeevich Matveev not left an imprint, although he was a prolific and multifaceted artist. He lived and worked he at the turn of XIX—XX centuries — the time, gave a lot of great Russian artists and an even greater number of seekers of the new art. N. With. Matveev, in the best of their abilities tried himself in historical genre, and in the household, and other areas of art were not alien to the artist. Note that the picture N. With. Matveeva "Twilight" (1891) joined the collection of Pavel Tretyakov, which was testimony to the artist a certain skill.
