Soviet graphic artist, full member AH the USSR (1953), people's artist of USSR (1967), laureate of the State prize of the USSR, corresponding member of the Academy of arts of the GDR.

He studied at the Kiev Studio N. A. Prahova (1919-22) and in Moscow D. N. Kardovsky (1923-28). Pred. the Board of the Moscow organization of the Union of artists of the RSFSR (Mosha) in 1959-61, 1966-68, and in 1972, the Secretary of the Union of artists of the USSR (1968).

Mainly Illustrator. Shmarinov works inherent to a realistic accuracy of visual interpretation of literary works, the credibility of the transmission of dramatic situations and socio-psychological characteristics of his characters: illustrations for the book "Crime and punishment" by F. Dostoevsky (charcoal, black watercolor, 1935-36, see Fig.), "Peter I" By A. N. Thick (charcoal, black watercolor, 1940-45), "War and peace" by L. N. Thick (black watercolour, 1953-55) - all in the Tretyakov gallery, Moscow; "a Hero of our time" by Mikhail Lermontov (charcoal, black watercolor, 1941, the Tretyakov gallery, Moscow, Russian Museum, Leningrad); "captain's daughter" (1974) and the Queen of spades (1976) A. S. Pushkin (both charcoal, black watercolor).

During the great Patriotic war of 1941-45 has fulfilled a number of political posters and imbued with the pathos of the angry cycle of easel drawings, "do Not forget, do not forgive!" (charcoal, black watercolor, 1942, the Tretyakov gallery, the USSR State prize, 1943; see Fig.), vividly narrating the suffering and courage of the Soviet people in the struggle with the enemy.

Created a series of paintings.
