- What is your understanding of painting?

- Fine art Trinity: painting, drawing, sculpture. Queen among them is painting. This space, which can not go. The music is not put on the notes. Poetry that words cannot Express. Painting is spirituality, which can be understood only through spirituality.

Of oil, do painting?

- A lot of artists who know how to write great, but don't know how to turn artistic vision. The Tretyakov gallery. Repin's painting "Ivan the terrible kills the son". Dramatic plot. Details of the person's blood. Everyone raves about. Come closer and see a piece of carpet, beautifully written. And - all. And here is a picture of Borisov-Musatov "the pond". There's no theatre. Stand far away, you see women. It's not impressive. Come closer and get into the musical zone (a distance equal to the larger side of the picture). And I can't see anything, no women, no water, and realize the leap into Eternity. Want to touch it, which is impossible. Repin - not quite painting.

- Sukhanov?

In 20 years I wrote still life, quickly, excitedly. When cooled down, stunned. All that was on the canvas was so cool! It was felt that the tubes of paint squeezed. Rag carried the warmth of the hands. The varnish was burning and was shining. I saw that this is not art, and the illusion. I destroyed the still life. Then I realized the genius of Vrubel's dictum: "in order to create a work of art, forget that you're an artist and rejoice in the fact that you are a man". Takes a long time to learn to be ignorant to understand that the most valuable thing in life that cannot be bought, and what can't be taught.

Painting is not fun. It's a cross that we must bear. Who are we? And Rembrandt, and Vrubel, Serov, and Gauguin, and Korovin. I hope among their followers. But if Kanu in the dark, so I am the manure, which will grow beautiful flowers.
