Register for the drawing lessons at the Riga school of the society of German artisans. In 1898 he graduated from the Department of decorative painting at the Central school of technical drawing Stieglitz, where he studied from 1892. In 1899 – 1900 years with a stipend from the school were trained abroad, mainly in France (Paris), Germany.

In the early 20th century Yu Madernieks lived and worked in St. Petersburg.

In 1902 he returned to Riga where he worked as a teacher of composition and drawing in the school of applied arts A. Birgel, Riga school of drawing society of painters and in some private schools.

In 1904 – 14 years Yu Madernieks, led by his art Studio in Riga.

In exhibitions the artist has participated since 1901.

Personal exhibitions are organized in Riga (1920, 1951), memorable exhibitions – in Riga (1970, 1981).

In the early 20th century, he participated in the circle of artists “Rūķis”.

Since 1944 he was a member of the Union of artists.

The artist was awarded the title of honour of the National leader of education Ministry of Arts and popular education of France (1926).

Yu Madernieks was one of the more significant of founders of Latvian professional applied art, and the brightest Latvian master of ornament in the early 20th century.
