Р. A. Pavlov was born on January 29, 1938 in Izhevsk, Udmurt ASSR in the year of rampant repression, under which his father fell when his son was only 5 months old.
These events of his personal life deeply and seriously affected the artist's fate and creativity. As an adult, researching this period of the country, delving into the depth of the events of that time and deeply experiencing them, he wrote his heroes, who were destroyed but not broken by the machine of repression. About their resilience, incorruptibility, and love for their country. In essence, Rudolf Pavlov is a deeply social artist. He has always been interested in the history of the people, its leaders, its heroes. Together with them he deeply experienced both grief and joy.
He received a good education for the time. From his school years he showed interest in drawing and painting. After finishing school in Chelyabinsk, from 1954 to 1956 he worked at the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant. In 1957 he entered the Sverdlovsk Art School named after I. Shadr. After two years of study was drafted into the army, where he was engaged in political agitation and propaganda of the goals and objectives of the Soviet Army by means of design art, drew maps. After the army he worked as an artist on television in 1964-1966. - he searched for his own method and style in the most diverse forms - from civil satire of TV screensavers, decor, to the design of productions, concerts, plays, TV films. In 1966, he was appointed head of the art studio of the Palace of Culture of Railwaymen, where he gave the basics of mastery in a variety of techniques - painting, graphics, decorative art, sculpture. Many of his students then successfully entered art universities. In parallel, he studied by correspondence at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute, specializing in "Graphics" (Artistic and technical design of printed products).
At the same time with his work in the Railroad Club, he was engaged in the design and illustration of books from regional writers to classic writers of Russian and Soviet literature. Moreover, during his life, the artist was guided by the principle of taking on the design of only those books, with the opinion of the authors of which he was in agreement, and if the work of the author was to his liking. He participated in art exhibitions.
The range of his creative searches and themes began to emerge. He worked a lot on the themes of Soviet "Chekism" and military-patriotic themes.
Rudolf Pavlov's work in the South Urals Book Publishing House was fruitful. The books with his design were published: "The Sky of Childhood" by I. Ukhanov, "Let the Light Shine" by A. Gaidar, "Meetings in Ilmeny" by V. Krasin, "The Artamonovs' Case" by M. Gorky, "Youth Drove Us", "Sturmans" by L. Khomutov, "About Writers from the Land" and others.
At this time he wanted to be accepted into the Union of Artists of the USSR, but it was not destined to come true, because in 1972-73, he was imprisoned, where he was engaged in agitation and propaganda of correctional-educational activity of the institution by artistic means. He independently studied correctional, procedural, investigative and prosecutorial law.
The artist himself said that he was imprisoned on purpose, as they wanted to remove him from creative work on social themes. He was imprisoned for 3 years. For good behavior, he was released a year earlier. "We've been waiting for you for a long time," they told him when they met him in prison.
Working on the construction sites of the national economy, engaged in visual agitation and propaganda in the field of labor law through his creative work.
A romantic at heart, Pavlov was fond of Russian history and devoted many paintings to the revolutionary theme: "Born of the Revolution" (1977-78), "Eiche's Ural Campaign" (1985), "Heroes of the Revolution" (1985), "Red Cavalry" (1998), etc. The artist's interest in human destinies was clearly manifested in a series of historical portraits of Lenin, Trotsky, Kamenev, Dzerzhinsky, Ya. The artist's interest in human destinies was clearly manifested in a series of historical portraits of V. Lenin, L. Trotsky, L. Kamenev, F. Dzerzhinsky, Y. Sverdlov (1985), military leaders of the Red Army I. Yakir, I. Uborevich, M. Tukhachevsky. In his creative activity he worked a lot on military and patriotic themes, evaluating bright personalities - heads of state, party and military leaders.
Pavlov's watercolors are very interesting - there are delicate and sensual, and there are very harsh portraits. At the exhibitions in Chelyabinsk were presented watercolor portraits, portraits painted in oil ("Portrait in a white headscarf", "Portrait of a girl in an orange blouse", "Portrait of a mother", "Portrait of a man", "Girl in red", "Female Portrait. Blonde", "Portrait of a Girl on a Blue Background", etc.). Unexpected is a series of his Astrakhan watercolors, wide, made with a scope, on the Volga - with the embankment, with ships, with barges, with rafts of wood (paintings from the series "Astrakhan" - "Rafting of wood", "Astrakhan").
A large cycle of paintings dedicated to the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant - "Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant. Convector", "Steelmaker", "Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant. Blast Furnace", "Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant. Smelting is", "At the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant" and others. Wonderful and landscapes of the artist. Among the landscapes in oil are very impressive "Moonlight", "Poplars", "Pine Branch".

Вспоминает Галина Николаевна Павлова, жена художника:
"It is impossible to enumerate how much was done by the artist during his life, a smaller part of his works has reached us. In all this he was an ordinary man who constantly had to struggle with the need and unsettled life, just to try to survive in this difficult world. I can not fail to note him as an intelligent, knowledgeable teacher, in whose studio I studied myself. For this leadership work he received many diplomas and encouragements. His creative works were noticed and noted in newspapers and magazines. He was awarded diplomas and certificates.
In essence, Rudolf Pavlov is a deeply social artist. He has always been interested in the history of the people, their leaders and heroes. He deeply experienced both sorrow and joy together with them. The circle of his interests is very wide - from large monumental works, such as panels in the foyer of the Palace of Culture of Railwaymen (he worked together with other artists), panels of the assembly hall of SU "Promotdelstroy", outdoor advertising on the facades of buildings, to easel painting and book graphics.
The artist very carefully approached each topic, studied, analyzed. In easel painting many works devoted to the revolution, created a series of paintings "Born by the Revolution", "Parade of troops on Revolution Square. 1917-1921. A romantic at heart, he presented the revolution in this way. Although he knew perfectly well the flaws and contradictions of that time. Everything he did, each of his works was deeply felt and experienced by him. During his life he grew up two sons, whom he loved very much. He did not chase after money and fame.
