Exhibition of the icon "Assumption of the Blessed Virgin"

展览 17 − 29 八月 2021
August 17, Primorsky State Picture Gallery presents the icon "Assumption of the Virgin" from the funds of the Primorsky State Picture Gallery as part of the cycle of exhibitions "Holy faces".
The Assumption of the Theotokos is one of the twelve important feasts in the Orthodox tradition. With the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary the fast of two weeks (begins annually on August 14 and ends on August 27) is connected. It is the shortest but the strictest fast. The people call the fast of Assumption - "Spasovka" - as there are two holidays devoted to the Savior Jesus Christ - the Origin of the honest wood of the Holy Cross (August 14, popular name - "honey") and Transfiguration of Our Lord (August 19 - "apple spas"). The word "Dormition" means a peaceful, dream-like death - the transition to eternity, so it is customary to speak of the dead as "the deceased.
The New Testament tells us that the crucified Christ, before His earthly death, commissioned the apostle John the Theologian to take the Virgin Mary on His provision (John 19:25-27).
The image "Assumption of the Blessed Virgin" in the collection of the Primorsky State Picture Gallery was painted in the icon-painting villages of Vladimir province in the 2nd half of the 19th century.
