Getty Museum presents large exhibition
"Chalk and Light. Pastels of the late 19th century".
The exhibition includes works by Edgar Degas, Odilon Redon and other masters of chalk writing, who worked in the second half of the 19th century, allowing us to trace the evolution of the technique from impressionism to symbolism.
In an era of visual experimentation, pastels offered artists an exciting range of possibilities: a shimmering palette, a variety of textures, and a freer way of working than oil paints. Pastel artists of the late 19th century achieved a range of surprising visual effects.
