Icon of The Savior Almighty

展览 16 − 28 八月 2022
From August 16 to 28, the Primorsky Picture Gallery presents the 19th century icon "Christ Pantocrator" from its collection within the framework of the cycle of temporary exhibitions "Holy Countenances".
The month of August, according to the calendar of the Orthodox Church, is rich in feasts that are called "Spas" (short for "Savior") by popular tradition. We are talking about three days of the Church calendar: "Honey Savior" (August 14), "Apple Savior" (August 19) and "Walnut Savior" (August 29). The Church consecrates the new fruits gathered in mid-August (honey, grapes, nuts) and encourages the faithful to remember that these three wonderful feasts, of which we spoke above, are dedicated to the Savior Jesus Christ.
In honor of these holidays, the Primorsky State Picture Gallery presents a shoulder-length image of the Savior Almighty from its collection. The icon was painted by an unknown 19th century master in Central Russia and conveys the shoulder-length image of Christ as on the ancient Russian miracle-working icons "Savior Zlatye Vlasi" and "Savior Yaroe Oko". Shoulder-length and pectoral depictions of the Savior are rarer than images of Christ seated on a throne in full-length or at the waist. Images of Christ at the shoulders were borrowed from ancient art - busts with portraits of emperors and generals, used on Byzantine coins and seals.
The icon is presented in the Hall of Old Russian Art of the Main Enfilades as part of the permanent exhibition "Russian Art. From Icons to the Avant-garde" at 12 Aleutskaya St
