Portrait is not only a plastic repetition of appearance, but also an ideological and artistic interpretation of a person as a whole. Throughout history, the portrait has performed different functions, existing either as an aloof mask, or as an enumeration of all possible signs and attributes, or as the result of formal, colorful and linear experiments. In one way or another, the artist is always engaged in reassembling the human figure in the right order according to specific tasks and context.
In that case, what is valuable in a portrait? A successful focus with likeness or a non-trivial "reassembly"? What are the criteria of a good portrait? The exhibition "One Face" demonstrates different techniques and approaches to portraying a person, his appearance and gut, by different authors. The artists depict friends, strangers and themselves in the form of subject compositions on the verge of still life, silhouettes and outlines, almost abstractly and traditionally, create three-dimensional objects.
The exhibition brings together more than thirty authors, including Alexander Pankin, Klara Golitsyna, Alexei Politov, Aladdin Garunov, Konstantin Malakhov, Lyudmila Voronova and others. The exposition includes paintings and graphic works, photography, collage, mosaics and sculpture made of wood, as well as works made with the use of non-traditional materials: rubber, glass, colored tape, wallpaper. The works are provided by the funds of the Moscow Exhibition Halls Association.
