Ivanovich Gabashvili

The Georgian painter, the largest representative of the Georgian realist art of the 2nd half of XIX - early XX centuries, people's artist of the Georgian SSR (1929). One of the founders and professors of the Academy of arts in Tbilisi (1922).

Born on 9 (21) November of 1862 in Tbilisi. Studied in the Petersburg Academy of arts (1886-1888 gg; volunteer in the class battle-BP Villevalde) and at the Munich Academy of arts (1894-97).. Has created a vivid gallery of portraits of the types of the townspeople and peasants ("the Three townsmen", 1893; "Sleep of the Khevsurs", 1898; "the Drunk Khevsurs", 1899; "a Kurd", between 1903 and 1909), which combines household juiciness with features of monumentality. Paintings of folk life are reflected in the multi-figure narrative compositions Gabashvili: "Bazaar in Samarkand" (1894, 1895, 1896, 1897), "the Pool, divan-Begi in Bukhara" (1897), "Alaverdoba" ("Temple festival"; 1899). Gabashvili also wrote portraits (I. Chavchavadze, between 1903-05; N. Nikoladze, 1926; etc.), landscapes, still lifes. All of these works Gabashvili - the art Museum of Georgia.

Died in Tsikhisdziri (Georgia) on 28 October 1936.
