Gennady Kalinovsky was born on 1 September 1929, Stavropol. Soon the family moved to Makhachkala, where the artist spent his childhood. The boy early in his memories, in the three years of age showed a passion for drawing. As a schoolboy, he joined the artistic circle in the House of pioneers. In 1943, the young artist submitted his work "the fall of the Nibelungs" in a drawing competition in the newspaper "pioneer truth". The work received first prize, and the author's recommendation to study at the Moscow secondary art school. Kalinowski went to Moscow, where he finished school and entered the Department of book graphics of the Surikov art Institute. He studied at the Surikov from 1949 to 1955

After graduation, the artist worked in periodicals, creating illustartive for magazines "Youth", "Ogonyok", "Family and school". In addition, illustrated books, for example, a collection of "Robin hood" M. Gershenzon, "lone White sail" by V. Kataev, "the Iron flood" Serafimovich A..

Real fame Kalinowski brought brilliantly and wittily executed illustrations to "Alice's Adventure in Wonderland" by L. Carroll in the retelling of Boris Zakhoder. Subsequently, he completed illustrations for several editions of books by Carroll.

Died 5 March 2006 in Moscow.

Wife (1969-1981) — writer and playwright Dean Kalinowski.
