Beauty and Style. History of Fashion Photography. From the Still Art Foundation collection

Ausstellung 12 Dezember 2021 − 13 März 2022
The State Hermitage presents an exhibition at the General Staff Building "Beauty and Style. History of Fashion Photography. From the Still Art Foundation's collection"The exhibition was organized by the State Hermitage Museum jointly with the Still Art Foundation.

The exhibition tells the history of fashion photography in the second half of the 20th and 21st centuries. Visitors will see authorial prints by Erwin Blumenfeld, Horst P. Horst, Richard Avedon, Irwin Penn, Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin, which have already become classics.

The earliest work on display is Horst P. Horst's classic 1939 author's print Mainbocher Corset, a striking symbol of Europe between the two world wars. It would become a kind of starting point for the history of the fashion industry: the war radically changed it and spurred the unification and rationing of the light industry. In the XX century fashion photography, on the one hand, makes an expansion into the field of high art, on the other - gaining a position in the sphere of popular culture. In the 1990s, young fashion photographers contrasted the dogmatic language of traditional glossy with relaxed, postmodernist humor, directness, and audacity of intonation.
