Epiphany (Baptism of the Lord). Exhibition of one icon as part of the cycle "Holy faces

Ausstellung 12 − 30 Januar 2022
In the coming 2022 Epiphany (Baptism of the Lord) is the first icon within the cycle of exhibitions of one work of ancient Russian art "Holy Countenances".
The Feast of the Epiphany originally combined the events of the birth and baptism of Jesus Christ, but in the fourth century the Feast of the Nativity was separated into an independent celebration. The days between the feasts of Christmas and Baptism became known as the Holy Days (i.e., holy days in which there is no fasting).
The icon depicts Jesus Christ receiving baptism from John the Baptist in the waters of the Jordan River (John the Baptist is also called John the Baptist for his baptism of Jesus Christ). At the moment of his baptism the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descended on him, and from heaven the voice of God the Father was heard. Thus, the whole Holy Trinity appeared to the world and that is why the event is celebrated in the church calendar as Epiphany. The basic rules for the depiction of Epiphany in Russian iconography over the centuries have been very stable.
The work from the collection of the Primorsky Picture Gallery belongs to the Novgorod iconography of the second half of the 16th century.
The exhibition will run until January 30.
