Albrecht Durer. To the 550th anniversary of his birth

Ausstellung 8 Dezember 2021 − 23 März 2022
The State Hermitage in St. Nicholas Hall holds a large-scale exhibition "Albrecht Dürer. On the 550th anniversary of his birth".

The basis of the exhibition were carved engravings and woodcuts, demonstrating the artist's unsurpassed skill in this field. These include all of his important prints, the Apocalypse, The Passion of Christ and The Life of Mary series as well as the Arch of Triumph and the Triumphal Procession, monumental prints created for Emperor Maximilian. Among the masterpieces are Dürer's own drawings, including sketches for church stained glass windows, studies for a pictorial altarpiece, sketches for engravings, and portraits.

All in all visitors will see more than 400 exhibits from the collections of the Hermitage, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the Russian National Library, the State Tretyakov Gallery, and the Yaroslavl Art Museum.

Albrecht Dürer was one of the greatest masters of the Renaissance, renowned primarily for his graphic works. His artistic heritage includes almost 100 paintings, about 1000 water-colours and drawings, more than 100 woodcuts and about 400 book illustrations. His contemporaries already perceived him primarily as a graphic artist. Dürer succeeded in raising gravure to a new level by giving it a degree of artistic freedom that art before him had never known.
