Biography and information

One of the best pupils of David, which he studied from 1785. In 1789 was awarded the Rome prize for his composition "Joseph recognized his brothers" (Paris, School of fine arts). Vyuchenik followers of the classic school, Girodet-Triozon felt the discrepancy between their creative principles with the requirements of the new era. Master one of the first uses romantic themes drawn from contemporary literature.

After 1810 from under the brush Girodet-Trioson left very few paintings — he was mainly drawing the illustrations to the works of Anacreon, Sappho, Virgil, Racine, and other poets. Trying his hand in the literary field, he wrote a poem about the painting.

One of the best pupils of David, which he studied from 1785. At the beginning of the artistic activities was fond of Greek mythology, and the pseudo-classicism which prevailed at that time in French art, was a forerunner of romanticism, soon replaced this direction.

 

In 1789 was awarded the Rome prize for his composition "Joseph recognized his brothers" (Paris, School of fine arts). Spent 5 years in Rome, where he was sent to Paris "Endymion" (now in Louvre) — the product of a few sugary and Cutesy, but, despite this, the met, as a kind of novelty, with the approval of the audience and art critics.

Hence the constant throwing of paintings in the spirit of classicism to the compositions, which are unimaginable and chaotic conglomerate, where military modern uniforms side by side with fantastic legends characters, reality with allegory, the academic interpretation of form with romantic expression ("the Apotheosis of the French heroes who died for their country during the liberation war" (1802, Malmaison Museum).

Innovation Girodet-Trioson more clearly manifested in the other, also of Roman work: "Hippocrates refusing the gifts of Artaxerxes" (1792). Of the few paintings of Girodet-Trizone noteworthy "Danae and Aurora, serving her mirror," "the shadow of the French generals, meet in the Elysian fields Ossian" (1801); "the Burial of Atala" (on the plot of the novel by Chateaubriand, 1808; in the Louvre), "Napoleon I receives the keys of the city of Vienna" (1808, is located in historic Versailles gallery), the famous "Stage during the flood" (1810 located at the Louvre) and "Pygmalion and Galatea" (1819).

Master one of the first uses romantic themes drawn from contemporary literature ("the Burial of Atala" by Chateaubriand; 1808, Paris, Louvre). Unquestionable artistic value are his portrait work.
